Ryan PT-22 “Recruit”

ryan pt22 140x105The Ryan, like many military trainers, is the military version of a successful civilian aircraft, the Ryan Model ST-3 series.  It was the first monoplane primary trainer used by the U.S. Army Air Corps as all before it were biplanes.
A large number of Ryan’s were exported prior to the U.S. entry into the war, with the biggest customer being the military of Netherlands East Indies (now Indonesia).
After the invasion of the NEI, Ryan’s were pressed into service, particularly in reconnaissance roles, and large numbers were shot down or destroyed on the ground.
