Fokker D.VII -  “Replicas”

fokker D.VII 140x105The Fokker D.VII was a German fighter aircraft from the fertile mind of “the Dutchman”, Anthony Fokker.  The D.VII proved itself superior to existing Allied fighters, leading a second “Fokker scourge”.
So many orders were placed that Fokker’s rivals (A.E.G. and Albatros) were forced to build them and pay a royalty to him.  Quality control and planning was not Anthony Fokker’s strong suit – he provided them with an aircraft to copy because he had no design plans.
First built in 1917, the D.VII won out over all other designs in a competition, with the final production version winning high praise from no less an authority than Manfred von Richthofen.  The D.VII was so superior that the Versailles treaty specified that they were all to be destroyed or given to the Allies.
There are many replicas of the Dr.I flying, but no originals survive.
